A recent American Medical News article entitled “Job-hunting in a recession: It may take some searching,” discusses unemployment for physicians, and what they are doing about it.
Doctors who would retire are holding off and continuing to work because their retirement funds have taken a hit due to the economic downturn. This leaves little room for new physicians to come and take their place. Doctors are coming out of residency programs having a hard time finding jobs and positions in bigger cities due to saturations. They are also finding that networking is harder than it used to be. Home-owning physicians are having a harder time finding new positions due to the reluctance of hospitals to wait for them to sell their house, relocation, etc.
They talk about several solutions very briefly. Locum Tenens positions help out with all those situations, for both candidates and clients. It gives flexibility for the physician to keep their homes, keep working, build networks by practicing in different areas of the country or type of settings. And, for the client, they are more likely to have coverage from flexible candidates and availability.
