According to an article published Sept 7, 2009 in the Dallas Morning News, there is a shortage for primary care physicians in Texas, specifically in rural areas.  Changes that brought limits to medical malpractice liability helped to increase the number of physicians in the state, but did little to attract them to underserved areas.

Hopefully, changes proposed in President Obama’s healthcare reform will attract more physicians to stay within the primary care specialties with increased reimbursements for their services.  The State of Texas is also working to enhance the program that offers medical school loan repayment to physicians that practice in rural areas.  Stayed tuned…until then, we have a plethora of locum tenens opportunities in rural Texas.
