In the news I constantly see articles about physician
shortages all across our country and the problems Americans face with staffing
medical facilities now and in the future. According to an article
published by American Medical News, the number of new physicians entering
practice each year is about 26,000, which is just enough to maintain the status
quo. If any positive news can be found in our country’s current
economic recession it’s that more physicians have stayed on the job due to
losses in real estate and retirement funds.
One of the possible solutions to this shortage is promoting
interests in careers as physicians or other health care professionals to our
nations students at a young age. In my own experiences I never thought
about or even considered a career in medicine or healthcare as a child.
It was when I started working in healthcare
staffing that I began to see a different side to medicine and health care that
really peaked my interest. Learning about the different specialties and
the day to day routines associated with the specialties, combined with helping
others, made me think that you could
definitely increase the number of physicians in our country by simply starting
our children early and peaking their interest. This idea may not
completely alleviate our countries physician shortage but I certainly believe
it’s a step in the right direction.
