“A wise old owl sat on an oak; the more he saw the less he spoke; the less he spoke the more he heard; why aren’t we like that wise old owl?”  Unknown

Taking a step back to truly understand your surroundings takes more than a weekend.  That was the feedback I would receive more often than not to committing to a job and a community indefinitely.  My job at the time was placing physicians in permanent positions.  With everybody’s best foot forward, the well rehearsed physician would fly in on Thursday or Friday with his or her itinerary in hand and in most cases  know exactly who they were meeting  and exactly where they should be at a certain time. Conversely the hospital was just as prepared, and  if I did my job correctly, had the right people in place to “wow”  the candidate.

While this is the formula 99 percent of the industries in the United States use when hiring, is it the best?  In many cases, yes, but imagine if you could test the waters within your industry before ever really jumping in.   Well, that is exactly what’s available to many employers and potential employees in the healthcare industry.  I’m finding that physicians who are able to work for a certain hospital or practice for a specified amount of time, truly get a feel for the environment they are entering.  Not only do they see the more attractive aspects of the facility, but they also get a feel for the possible lack of coverage in certain areas, the disgruntled physician who’s long since checked out, or the short term earning potential not being what was advertised.  On the other side of the coin, the hiring facility is able to more accurately  see the candidate’s true colors.  In the end, both parties know with high certainty that the choice they’re making is the right one!
