While campaining, one of president-elect Barack Obama’s key
issues was health care reform. Under Obama’s proposed health care plan,
private insurance will still exist; however a government subsidized public
system would surface. Under the plan, those who have health insurance can
keep their existing coverage and those who want a new plan or those who are
uninsured will be able to purchase a health care plan through a National Health
Insurance Exchange. There are currently an estimated 45 million uninsured
Americans so, ultimately, Obama’s plan would increase the number of insured
Americans by 15%.
You may be thinking, “if more Americans are
going to be insured, then how could this be a bad thing?” Recent
survey results show that many primary care doctors in the U.S. feel “overworked,
and nearly half plan to either cut back on how many patients they see or quit
medicine entirely.” The survey serves as a confirmation that “not enough
internal medicine or family practice doctors are trained or practicing in the
United States, although there are plenty of specialist physicians.” Now,
if there is a significant shortage of internal medicine or family practice
doctors now, then what is going to happen ifthe 45 million uninsured
Americans become insured because of the proposed national health care plan?
Imagine adding a heavier patient load to the “76 percent of physicians that say
they are working at full capacity or are overextended and overworked.”
So
what does this mean to us? Well, quite simply, it solidifies the need for
Locum Tenens--specifically in the family medicine and internal medicine
specialties. Now, more than ever before, clients need us to find them
qualified candidates to help relieve the additional stress and workload that
the increase in patients will bring.
