The staffing industry tends to be, in a sense, somewhat sterile, but not this time.

By sterile, I mean this:  there are businesses that have needs, candidates that have wants, and those of us in the middle of the process trying to put those needs and wants together. Thousands of phone calls, millions of emails, countless advertisements on the web and in magazines, and even still in this day and age a fax or an e-mail and a match is made, and both parties achieve a mutual goal. The funny thing is, there is so much electronic interaction that many times faces are not ever seen in person during the process. Something looks good on paper, sounds like a good opportunity over the phone, or a picture in an ad catches your eye, and the candidate actually does want to take the job.

That’s one of the reasons that I am thankful for doctors that I get the opportunity to work with, like Dr. Todd Emerson. When he and I first connected over the phone (after several attempts and a grand game of phone tag) I am sure that we both may have thought “Oh here is another doctor to talk to” or, on the other end, “Here is another recruiter on the phone and how did he get me to pick up this time?” Our initial brief conversation may have been somewhat typical: he said “I need this, this and this, and don’t forget about this,” and my contribution probably sounded like “well I have this gig and here is sorta where it is, and will you do it for this amount and how many felonies do you have?”

What did transpire after that exchange I would consider to be remarkable in several ways. Dr. Todd and I found many ways to connect over the past several months. Some topics had to do with the eventual assignment that he fulfilled for one of our fortunate clients this summer. He had a specific timeframe in mind to complement his work at a university in California and our client had a need for just that timeframe. He and his family traveled together this summer and we able to spend that time exploring a beautiful part of Northern California, and the community that he served in was truly grateful to have a doctor of his caliber working with them to care for those that needed the hand of a healer. We both discovered we had shared experiences of living overseas, matters dealing with faith and family and even the fact that we both purchased new homes at the same time this summer. We have talked baseball, fatherhood, college life, forest fires and even shared pictures of our family with each other.

Through this engagement I learned that because of the phone calls, the ads, the emails and the faxes I get the chance not only to  conduct a business transaction, but more so that I get to be a part of the experiences that one of my doctors has while on assignment. Thank you, Dr. Emerson, for taking my call that day last spring and know that I (and the community you served in) are looking forward to next summer.
